Benin Queen bronze head, Nigerian ethnic art
Benin was an African Kingdom of the Edo people, in present day Nigeria, which reached its apogee in the Sixteenth Century. During this period, Edo craftsmen produced striking bronze artefacts, remarkable for their beauty and high degree of naturalism. Particularly arresting examples of this ancient artistry are the large heads of Edo kings and queens which today captivate visitors at the British Museum and a few other prestigious European museums.

Over the centuries, Nigerian craftsman have continued to pay tribute to this ancestral bronze-making tradition with the creation of beautiful replica heads. The head featured here is a representation of the Queen mother, in all her regalia, with her striking conical headgear and her neck-rings, proudly displayed on a mahogany plinth.

This stunning bronze head of an Edo Benin queen is in excellent condition. To appreciate the high quality of this item, please take time to view our pictures showing the bronze head from all angles.
